Leadership

The Bureau of Criminal Apprehension supports local agencies in their efforts to solve and prevent crimes. The BCA is led by a team with decades of experience in the various specialty services the BCA provides. You can reach any one of them at 651-793-7000. The BCA organizational chart shows the sections that report to the superintendent and deputy superintendents.

Drew Evans, Superintendent

Drew Evans became Superintendent of the BCA in 2015. Superintendent Evans oversees all aspects of the BCA, which is comprised of four divisions – Minnesota Justice Information Services, Investigative Services, Forensic Science Services and Professional Services.

Diane Bartell, Deputy Superintendent of Minnesota Justice Information Services

Diane Bartell oversees the BCA’s Minnesota Justice Information Services division. MNJIS is the BCA’s technology section – providing systems, data, tools and processes for criminal justice agencies to access and use to share information about individuals in Minnesota’s criminal justice system to keep Minnesotans safe. MNJIS also provides public services including fingerprinting and criminal history background checks.

Dana Gotz, Deputy Superintendent of Professional Services

Dana Gotz heads the BCA’s Professional Services division, which includes BCA criminal justice training programs, data practices and legal services, legislative affairs, strategic planning, law enforcement national accreditation, and the BCA’s fiscal services such as budgeting, procurement, and grants and contracts management.

Catherine Knutson, Deputy Superintendent of Forensic Science Services

Catherine Knutson leads the BCA Forensic Science Services. Its crime scene team collects evidence at crime scenes. The laboratories analyze evidence submitted by law enforcement agencies for testing and support the statewide evidentiary breath alcohol program by training operators and maintaining the fleet of dedicated instruments. BCA forensic scientists will often testify about their work during court proceedings.

Scott Mueller, Deputy Superintendent of Investigative Services

Scott Mueller heads the BCA’s Investigative Services, which includes predatory crimes, narcotics, homicide, police use-of-deadly-force and conflict investigations, our Violent Crime Reduction Unit, as well as the Minnesota Fusion Center, the Financial Crimes Task Force and the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.
