A Minnesota State Patrol Commercial Vehicle Inspector (CVI) is responsible for enforcing state and federal laws, rules and regulations governing the operation of motor carriers, commercial vehicle operations and school bus operations in the State of Minnesota. CVI’s investigate complaints of violations and educate, train, and advise carriers, shippers, other law enforcement agencies and the general public regarding motor carrier regulations. 

Duties 

CVIs primarily work at fixed scale sites across the state, conducting inspections on commercial vehicles and drivers who operate them. CVIs may also be called to assist at accidents that involve a commercial motor vehicle to aid in finding cause with a thorough investigation of the vehicle and driver. In addition, CVIs frequently partner with Minnesota State Troopers and allied agencies to conduct organized enforcement saturations away from fixed scale sites. CVIs work in all types of weather, since inspections may take place roadside or at accident scenes, fixed scale sites, school bus garages, tow yards, etc. 

Training 

CVIs receive training to ensure a high degree of technical knowledge relating to the operation and mechanical maintenance of commercial motor vehicles. Upon hire, CVIs attend an eight-week academy in Mendota Heights, MN. As a part of the extensive training, several certification tests are required to be passed prior to being fully hired. CVI’s must have good communication and interpersonal skills, have good problem-solving capabilities, and be professional at all times. A background in the operation and mechanical components of commercial motor vehicles is helpful but not required.
