Contact Gopher State One Call (GSOC) by calling 811 before starting any excavation project. Whether the project is large or small, if you are using machine-powered equipment or just a shovel and rake to plant a garden, get your work area marked. Contacting GSOC in advance helps you and your loved ones dig safely while avoiding costly damages to underground facilities.

Calling before you dig is the law in Minnesota

Minnesota State Statute Chapter 216D​ requires anyone who engages in any type of excavation to provide advance notice of at least 48 hours (not including day of call/submission, weekends and holidays) to Gopher State One Call. There are two ways to report excavation activity in Minnesota. You can visit GSOC and enter your dig information online, or you can dial 811 and speak to a phone representative. The service provided by Gopher State One Call to excavators is free of charge. The cost of Gopher State One Call is provided by Minnesota's underground facility operators.

CALL BEFORE YOU DIG

  • It’s the law to notify Gopher State One Call at least 48 hours (not including day of call/submission, weekends and holidays) in advance of your plans to excavate.
  • There are two ways to report excavation activity: Call 811 or go to gopherstateonecall.org.
  • Notifying Gopher State One Call ensures the utilities buried in your yard are marked so you don’t damage them.
  • You are required to mark the digging area with white stakes or spray paint so locators don’t mark your entire yard.
